Peace Not Apartheid?

The Independent covers the latest volley in the spat between conservationists and humanists over just how racist the war on invasives/non-natives/exotics/illegals/three-fifths is. The defensive cry of “Don’t call me Goebbels” hits just the right hysterical note, if you ask me. I do wonder what the ecological equivalent of the Obama election would be…

Professor Smout also has this view: “If one species can successfully interbreed with another, it might assist its survival in evolutionary terms. If it is a failure, the hybrid will die out.” Now who’s the Nazi? That’s biological social Darwinism.

Anyway, more directly: when he says, “”The preoccupation with alien species is comparatively recent and not something which worried scientists and ecologists 50 years ago,” he displays stunning lack of insight into environmental history for someone about to publish a book called “Exploring Environmental History.”) Other things that people weren’t really worried about 50 years ago: internet addiction, cellphone brain cancer, Sarah Palin.

I think there’s an interesting debate to be had about the ethics of culling exotic populations to preserve native ones, but this guy should not be the spokesperson.
